French Polishing

French polishingFrench polishing has been around since the 18th century. It became popular during the Victorian period and was used extensively on quality mahogany furniture. It was considered the best finish for high end furniture.

French polishing is actually a technique not a material. The material used in the french furniture polish technique is shellac. French polishing is a highly technical skill and can take years to master.

Reviving Old French Polish

Reviving old polishReviving old french polish on antique furniture can be achieved successfully rather than stripping the piece and starting again in a lot of cases. Restoring rather than repolishing a piece of antique furniture will help to retain the aged look of the piece, this is called patina. The aged patina of a piece of antique furniture cannot be reproduced, thus making it highly sort after and valued by antique dealers & collectors alike. We have used this skill set on antique furniture many times over the years with great results.

Danish Oil Finishing Services

Danish oil, sometimes referred to as Scandinavian oil finishes, became popular in the mid-20th century during the Danish & Scandinavian design period. Famous designers like Hans Wagner, Arne Jacobson & Poul Henningsen to name a few, all found that the Danish oil satin finish complimented their Scandinavian furniture designs.

During the 60's Danish oil was extensively used and it has become very popular again due to mid-20th century furniture being in vogue once more.

Wax Finishing Services

There are many wax products on the market, however, many are not the best choice for wood finishes. The wax that is most widely used in the antique industry is carnauba wax which is extracted from the leaves of the carnauba palm native to Brazil.

Wax does not work well as a primary finish as it can look dull and sticky if applied directly on to timber. Wax is far better used to compliment a finish such as French shellac.

Wax finishing can be applied using different techniques giving an organic texture to antique finishes.
